We left from Hilo to Oahu early morning. It took about 45 minutes to fly from island to island and was a really smooth flight. We landed, took a cab to our hotel and Embassy Suites gave us vouchers to have breakfast. We had a great breakfast and they had a room ready for us early!!!! Yay! We all took a much needed nap and then took a booked shuttle from Waikiki area in Honolulu to Pearl Harbor. We had our tickets for the U.S.S. Arizona and were able to quickly browse through some of the museums before we boarded the boat to the memorial.
The boat ride was short and we had a small amount of time to view the memorial and look out in the waters where the men that died there are still entombed. It was very sobering and moving.
A total of 2,335 military personnel were killed at Pearl Harbor during the attack. A total of 2,403 people died including civilians. 1,177 of these were from the USS Arizona.
After we left Pearl Harbor the driver took us to a few sights around Pearl Harbor including the National Cemetery of the Pacific also known as Punchbowl.
'Iolani Palace was the residence of the Kingdom of Hawaii rulers and is the only royal residence in the United States. The rule began with Kamehameha III (1845) and ended with Queen Lili'uokalani(1893).
We arrived back to our hotel. This view is at the end of the hallway of our floor. You can see the hotel pool and then views of the ocean past. There was a paved walk to the famous Waikiki beach and was just a few minute walk from our hotel. It was a great location!
We changed into our swimsuits and headed to the pool. Jamie and I had a few beverages and the girls enjoyed happy hour with snacks and drinks. At sunset, we walked to the beach and watched the beautiful skies. The girls of course couldn't stay out of the water.
I thought it was fascinating that there are only 12 letters in the alphabet, Consonants: H,K,L,M,N,P,W and Vowels: A,E,I,O,U. They put various lines and accent marks and apostrophes to distinguish length and how to emphasize certain letters in the word.
some iPhone shots of the girls loving the Hawaiian sunshine...
Juliette looking out toward the nightlife on our balcony in the hotel. We were all pretty exhausted from the day and opted in for room service!
