Good-bye Bar Harbor
and Acadia

Maine through
Massachusetts,
Rhode Island and
Connecticut

We packed up the car and traveled some more through the Northeast.  We stopped in Providence, Rhode Island at Flatbread Pizza Company and drove by Brown University.  We intended to travel to Newport that has a harbor filled with yachts and a cliff walk that is filled with mansions but the traffic was so busy.  After dinner we drove to Hartford, CT to spend the night.

Acadia National Park

Acadia was the first Eastern National Park and the land was donated by wealthy philanthropists and land owners in the early 20th century.  It is one of the most visited parks in the US.
Cadillac Mountain is one of the first places in the United States that receives the first light of the day.  Sunrise is around 4:30 am and you hope that the morning isn't cloudy or foggy.  Although I had every intention on waking up my sleepy heads to see the sunrise, it just didn't happen.
The girls love to scamper up and down the rock.  The views are truly beautiful!

This is the three-toothed cinquefoil.  It is common in eastern Canada but also grows along the Appalachian Mountains and the high outcrops.

You can walk along the parking area to get a great view all around of the harbor and ocean.

That afternoon we drove to Jordan Pond.  Parking is scarce after 11 am and although they have a shuttle going around the park, it was nice to have our things with us in the car.  We were lucky to find a spot in one of their lots.

Jordan Pond trail is a 3 mile loop around the pond.  It is really pretty with a neat boardwalk on part of the trail.  You can see birds, water fowl, a lot of evidence of beaver activity and breathe in the fresh evergreen air.

 Jordan Pond
A really interesting tree stump

We were hoping to see a beaver or even a porcupine in a tree but didn't see any wildlife.  It is a very popular trail this time of day!

After our hike, we went to the famous Jordan Pond House for their popovers, drinks and an early dinner.  We ran into our friends from Zionsville that happened to be there at the same time!  They have girls in the same grades as Isabelle and Allie.  They had fun chasing each other outside and it was fun to see a familiar face in a new place!

The popovers are like a flaky soufflĂ©.  You spread butter and strawberry jam in the middle.  It was very tasty!

Maine has more than 70 lighthouses along over 3,400 of coast.  We read that every light has a unique color and pattern for mariners to identify their location.
Bass Harbor Head Light was built in 1858.  It was automated in 1974 and the red light darkens every 4 seconds.  This is a private residence and run by the US coast guard.
You can hike down a steep path to the harbor.
