Although the clouds were heavy and rain was imminent we took the New England Whale Watching tour once again to see if we could see any whales. We were not disappointed when we saw a mom and her calf and another humpback feeding in Stellwagan Bank. The round trip tour takes about 3-4 hours. Stellwagan Bank is a rich feeding ground for whales and is about 25 miles east of Boston. We were told that Humpback whales are about the length of a school bus and weigh 40 tons. It was very exciting!
The Humpback feeding and opportunistic birds surround.
This whale was briefly right next to the boat! So amazing!
Probably the most spectacular sight was when the mother and calf began breaching out of the water.
The were able to ask the "naturalists" on the boat many great questions. Juliette wanted to know..."how many fishes were in the ocean?" and "how many people have fallen out of the boat?" (the answer to that last question was none on their boat :)) They drew pictures in the provided notebooks and learned all about the many whales. They even were able to see bones and baleen.
It was a fantastic tour and we hope to get the opportunity to do it again sometime!
After the whale watching we decided to finish up another portion of the Freedom Trail.
We made it far north to see the U.S.S. Constitution. We unfortunately got there right as it closed but were able to see a bit of the museum near by. It was an interesting place with an interactive area for the kids which they found a lot of fun.
Self timer did come in handy this trip!
