291.365 Mammoth Cave National Park

This fall break we decided to make a road trip south and east to see more of our beautiful country, fall color, and add a couple more National parks to our list!  On Saturday we drove to Louisville and stayed with cousin Nancy.  We had fun seeing her, tasting some bourbon, playing with her kitties and eating out at a great restaurant tasting some of my first "Derby Pie" and "Hot Brown".  On Sunday, we drove about a hour and half south to Mammoth Cave National Park.

Our tour wasn't for a few hours, so we walked and got a quick lunch of hot dogs and pulled pork with chips.

We got tickets for the Domes and Dripstones Tour which included narrow passageways, dripstone formations, and the Frozen Niagra.
Waiting for our bus shuttle.
Before we entered, they gave the disclosure statement about the cave and needless to say, Isabelle was really nervous!

At the first opening, "The Grand Avenue" the ranger sat us down and gave us some history on the cave and how they used dynamite to blast passageways so they could explore.  This is also where I started to have a little anxiety of my own!

This area is a dry part of the cave and the water is far below us.
Mammoth Caves are the longest cave system known in the world.
The caves consist of sandstone and limestone.

The tour took around 2 hours and the bus brought us back to the parking lot.

We said our good-byes to Nancy and promised her we would be back to visit Louisville soon!
