7.3.2023 Meteora

Today we took a private tour by van to Meterora.

Between the 13th and 14th centuries, 24 Eastern Orthodox Monasteries were built on pillars, boulders and hills in this area of Thessaly Greece.  There are 6 left, most of which you can tour. Each monastery houses fewer than 10 individuals.

The monasteries were said to have been built by hermit monks hiding from Turkish attacks.  Some of the ways of reaching these buildings are long staircases carved in stone or even by ropes and pulley system access.

The tour was a long day.  We got to visit 3 monasteries and this took up the majority of the time.  It is about 222 miles from Athens and would take about 4 1/2 hours driving straight there without stops.  The scenery is just stunning and the area around Meteora was especially beautiful.  On the way back to Athens, we stopped at a quaint restaurant to eat.
