Goodbye Santorini! You were a dream.
Off to the airport!
While you can take a boat to Athens, we decided to save some time by flying there. It was about a 45 minute flight and would have taken 6 hours by ferry.
With no time to waste, we walked the streets of Athens.
The Acropolis museum was an easy walk from our hotel.
The sights of the city on the walk to the Acropolis.
The Acropolis is the hill the Parthenon is located. The Parthenon is a temple.
It is carved out of Pentelic marble and said to take the Athenians approximately 10 years to construct in 447-438 BCE.
This ancient site contains the remains of several buildings, such as the Parthenon, The Temple of Athena Nike, the Propylaea, and the Erechtheion.
Remains of the Theatre of Dionysus
Isabelle has an impressive knowledge of greek and roman mythology and has been fascinated by it since reading the Rick Riordan books as a young teen. It was a dream to come on her senior trip to see where the myths began.
It is built on a rocky hill with steep sides. The Parthenon was the center of religious life. Athena was the goddess of war and wisdom. The temple also stands as a monument of democracy.
It is said the Parthenon served many purposes.
One of the surprises in Greece were the many cats in the cities! They are inundated with stray and feral cats.
What a lovely place to live!
I think the cats certainly survive on the kindness of tourist and also residents too!
