4.3.2018 Iceland day 5, Mývatn, Hverir, Dettifoss blizzard, Akureyri

Shawn woke up this morning with the same virus that Juliette had!  Poor guy!  We had to keep moving along unfortunately.  He was feeling better by mid day and we were thankful it was short lived and that no one else got it at this point.

White out conditions.
We were really excited to explore this northern part of Iceland in Myvatn but the weather did not make it easy today.  Since we were there we got out to quickly explore the geothermal area.  It is truly a place that is out of this world with blue mud-pots, fluorescent yellow fumaroles and lava formations (that we couldn't get to see).  It was so unique and will absolutely make it back on a summer trip some time.  We missed two impressive waterfalls, Godafoss and Dettifoss due to the whiteout conditions but were able to revel in the wonder of other amazing sights.

A map that gives you an orientation of the Myvatn area.
When we arrived in Akureyri the skies were clearing a bit and it was a calm and fluffy snow.  They have a ski area not far from here.  We stayed at an amazing apartment called Saeluhus.  It had a super layout with a hot tub with a great view of the lake.  Akureyri is Iceland's second biggest city with 18,000 people.  It very relaxing evening.

It took about 45 minutes to fill the hot tub with fresh water that is heated geothermal.  It was really hot!  The manager said that they like it hot in Iceland and it was around 39.5 degrees but I think it felt warmer.  The girls took turns dumping snow in it to cool it down.  When it started to snow again it felt amazing sitting and relaxing in the hot tub.

The guys went to get some fresh fish and food at the grocery and we all relaxed and had a great meal. It was well equipped and we had a lot of space too.
