4.2.2018 Iceland Day 4 Eastern fjords, Öxi pass, Icelandic Horses, Egilsstaðir

We walked out the next morning and had a fresh dusting of snow on the ground and the car!  No surprise there!  We brought a lot of layers for this trip and had good waterproof hiking boots for the kids and us which were absolutely essential.  One thing I did leave behind that was a BIG mistake was their snow pants.  I had read on some blogs that we could get by with layers and since it is almost their summer, that the snow was more intermittent.  We did talk to some locals that the weather was atypical this weekend and that every 5-10 years they get big snowstorms around Easter!  I had them wear their base layers everyday and they were comfortable although I would advise not only to bring ski pants but also a ski mask as well...maybe goggles too! The Weather Channel was so inaccurate and since it changed by the minute while driving through the country was worthless to even check.

A bird watching paradise!
Djupavogshreppur
Black lava beach and snow and a grey and stormy sea!  Magical picture!

So many stunning views along the highway.
The eastern fjords were just breathtaking.

We would see many waterfalls too.

We stopped by this cute harbor town to use the restroom and get a few groceries.

Although we saw many horses, we also saw beef cattle and sheep too.

We went off the ring road to go through the mountains to Egilsstadir.  Thank goodness for blue skies during this pass.  The road was well plowed and the views were gorgeous.  In treacherous weather this might have been a very scary incident!  Some of the plowed areas were much taller than the van.

We arrived at our cabin in Egilsstadir and it was in the country away from the town.  We chose this location hoping to be far away enough from the city to see the Northern Lights.  Unfortunately we had so much cloud cover again when it was dark!  It was a picturesque area.  The girls had fun walking around the property and finding trolls.  We cooked dinner at the cabin that night.

We did happen to see some very curious and sweet horses along the road.  We just couldn't resist saying hi.

A beautiful sunset.
