Our place was on a golf course. Palm Desert is full of resorts, fancy streets, green lawns and flowers but when you get out of city limits you are literally in a barren desert!
We mainly stayed there for it proximity to Joshua Tree National Park. This is our 38th national park we have visited.
Joshua Tree has two desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado.
The park is named for the Joshua Trees which are bristled and unique. They usually have a single trunk and then grow 3 to 9 feet before branching. They are a type of Yucca and according to the web were named by Mormons in the 1850s who saw their branches in the arms of Joshua pointing to the promised land.

We drove through the park on the way toward the Salton Sea.
Salvation Mountain is truly a unique experience and due to a man named Leonard. His passion to scripture and tribute to God is a sight to behold in the "mountain" of message, paint, and art.
Three words:
GOD IS LOVE
Salvation Mountain is located in Slab City, an off the grid lifestyle community in the Salton Trough area of the Sonoran Desert. Although 150 residents live here year around, thousands will come camp/live in this unincorporated area. Makeshift homes dot the desert.
We drove through the Coachella Valley filled with acres of farms on the way back to Palm Springs.
