Although we stayed very close to the west entrance, the east side of Glacier took at least 2 1/2 hours one way to drive as the going to the sun road was not open. It was still very picturesque and beautiful!
We drove to the Saint Mary Visitor Center.
We drove as far as we could on the road and it was closed after the Jackson Glacier Overlook. They were still plowing Logan Pass which records up to 100 feet of snowfall a year.
We parked and decided to hike as far as we wanted on the Going to the Sun Road.
It was certainly an interesting perspective getting to walk on this famous road! Many bicycles will travel this road at this time as well.
We had a great lunch and had some beautiful views of Saint Mary Lake as well.
We took a chance that we would be lucky enough to find parking at Many Glacier. The road was under construction and much of it was not paved.
We made it and found parking near the Swiftcurrent Nature Trail. A ranger recommended Redrock Falls hike and we weren't disappointed!
We were commenting on how we had not seen a lot of wildlife yet...we saw a leech in the lake...
and on our way back some startled hikers said there was a bear on the trail just a hundred yards ahead. Armed with bear spray and speaking to each other loudly, we kept hiking and didn't spot the bear.
But then just ahead a huge bull moose was foraging in the woods! Wow! So big!!!
Mule deer
It was around 6:30 pm and the animals were really coming out! We started the car and we suddenly saw a moose and her calf running through the parking lot! So exciting!
What a sight to see...we started to make our long trip back to the west side when just off the side of the road...not far from our car...a GRIZZLY!
We saw a lot of deer in the ditches on our way back to our place...and also a black bear sprinted across the road that we had to brake suddenly for.
What an ending to a wonderful day!
