94.365 {2017} Eilean Donan Castle, Isle of Skye

 The Commando Memorial

This is dedicated to the lives of those who gave their lives for service during the 1939-1945 War.

Looking at memorials on this chilly morning.
 The revenge of lain Lom

The Well of the Seven Heads monument.

This monument commemorates a MacDonald clan feud that is happened in September 1663 when a chief and his brother were murdered, lain Lom and fifty men went and captured and beheaded the killers.  They then took the seven heads of the killers and first cleaned them in the spring waters by Loch Oich on the way to present to Lord MacDonell at Invergarry Inbhir Garadh.

They did find seven headless bodies many years later near Inverlair.
 Our ride for the tour!
Next stop...the gorgeous castle,  Eileen Donan.  The castle was built in the early 13th century by the MacKenzies.  It was reduced to ruins in 1719 when it was bombarded by government ships during the battle of Glenshiel.  It was rebuilt in the early 20th century.  It is one of the most photographed castles in all of Scotland and you can see why!

 Loch Duich

 Allie gives us a tour.

We had planned to take a ferry to the Isle of Skye but the weather wasn't cooperating, so we drove around and over the bridge.
 Thatched roof house
Just hours on the island, we were blown away by the mountains, beautiful nature, lochs and wild landscape.  Sheep dotted the view.  It was breathtaking!

The name for the island is from the old Norse meaning 'cloud island'.

 Broadford

 Elgol

The drive from Broadford to Elgol is certainly one of the most scenic on Skye.
Highland Scottish coos have quite a view.

Elgol pier and looking toward the Cuillin Hills range.

 seaweed covered boulders

There were so so many waterfalls!
We arrived to Portree which is the largest town on Skye.  It has such a pretty harbor.

We were treated to a very brief and vivid rainbow as we walked to dinner.  So picturesque with the colorful boats in front of the hills docked in the harbor!
