Thanks to the largest solar flare of this current 11 year cycle, we were treated to an unusual Aurora Borealis that was visible even in Florida and the Caribbean! Solar flares are intense burst of electromagnetic radiation that come from sunspots on the surface of the sun. This massive sunspot that created the multiple flares is 17 times the diameter of the Earth! Auroras occur when the charged particles collide with gases in Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere. These particles travel 150 million kilometers across space!
The colors that we were treated to; pink, blue and purple are associated with intense solar activity. While these photographs certainly are much more vibrant and intense than our eyes could see in our backyard, it was amazing nevertheless.
We were really lucky to see it as we had a forecast of clouds and more clouds...but thankfully they parted just in time.
Isn't this world and universe just amazing!?
The Big Dipper!
