10.12.2021 Bandelier National Monument, Aspen Vista Sante Fe

We were so thrilled to finally have been able to experience the peaking of the beautiful yellow aspens in the west during fall break! We always seem to miss it by days.  On a recommendation we drove up to hike a bit of the aspen vista trail in Santa Fe.  It started to snow but the colors were just brilliant!

Today, we drove to explore Bandolier National Monument which is about 1 1/2 hours away from Santa Fe.  The human history of this beautiful area dates back over 10,000 years where nomadic hunter gatherers  moved through the canyons and mesa farming and hunting.

In the 1550s, Puebloan people had more settlements.

Spanish settlers with Spanish land grants made their homes here in Frijoles Canyon in the middle of the 1700s.

It was truly an amazing place where we explored with hikes, scrambled up to see the Ancestral Pueblo Dwellings and admired the wilderness.

Inside the Dwelling

Tyuonyi was inhabited at the same time as the dwellings built along the base of the cliff.

You can climb ladders to access several cave dwellings called cavities along Pueblo Loop Trail.  According to the information booklet, stone homes also stood in front of the dwellings.

Is it easier to go down facing out or in?  :)

We also walked up Frijoles Canyon to Alcove House which had us climbing 140 feet up 5 wooden ladders and stairs. Nerve wracking but we did it!

We also continued the Falls Trail to see a lot more scenery and beauty.  For lunch we dined at the park's cafe which was so delicious!  Everything we ate and drank was outstanding.
