198.365 Bighorn Mountains, Devil's Tower, Mount Rushmore

I don't remember Wyoming being so mountainous centrally the last time I drove through.  This country of ours surprises me with beauty.  We drove about 7 hours from Cody towards Devil's Tower on scenic highway 16.

 Powder River Pass

9666 ft above sea level and the highest point in the Big Horn National Forest

Devil's Tower seemingly arose out of nowhere.
They had a prairie dog area near-by.  They are such curious creatures and an important part of the food chain in the plains.

We walked the mile or so loop around.
Wyoming has the first National Park (Yellowstone) and also the first National Monument (Devil's Tower).

This is a very sacred place for Native Americans and there were many scarves and handkerchiefs hanging in the trees.

We drove another 2 hours to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.

We had a quick dinner on site and also ice cream.

We stayed for the light show around 9:30.  We then made our way back to Rapid City to stay the night.
