cahokia mounds

On the way to St Louis on Wednesday, we stopped in Collinsville, IL about 15 miles from East St. Louis to visit the Cahokia Mounds. This is a Unesco World Heritage site (one of 21 in the US) and originally had 120 mounds, 80 of which remain today. Is, Al and Daddy hiked up the largest mound, "Monks Mound" which is the largest man made mound north of Mexico. It is about 10 stories high. The history on this site is fascinating and archeologists estimated that around 40,000 people lived here during its peak, in about 13th century.
