MAUI DAY 6 HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK

After the tour, we had a great breakfast in Waikapū at the Maui Tropical Plantation.  It was much warmer down here! It had a great market with coffee and farm goods. It has activities but you can walk around the beautiful grounds and can see remnants of an old sugar mill by the restaurant.

You can do a lot of hiking, but our tour didn't plan for that but we did get to see some great views on a few stop offs.

It was pitch black with the exception of the amazing stars when we arrived.  As the sun came up, I couldn't believe the landscape around us!  It was like we arrived on Mars.

The summit of this dormant volcano is 10,023 feet.  While it looks like a big crater, it is actually a large erosional valley.

You need to get a reservation to get a spot to see the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park.  We took a super early tour (3 am) much to the kids dismay to see the beautiful cloud formation, dramatic volcanic views and gorgeous sunrise at this sacred park.  It was cold!  40 degrees and wind, but with our parka blankets from the tour, it was tolerable.  We got a great spot.  This makes seeing our 41st national park!
